Brom suffered a spinal cord injury (C5-6) from a swimming accident that left him paralyzed from shoulders down. While hospitalized with a trachea tube, during routine turning in a circle bed, the tube caught in sheets and came out of his throat, causing respiratory arrest. He became fully engulfed in heavenly light while being propelled forward, clearly hearing rushing wind. After moments of awe, he realized his consciousness had separated from his body. Instinctively struggling to return by trying to shrug shoulders, blink eyes, and turn his head initially had no effect. Unknown to him, a doctor present recognized the emergency, grabbed a hand pump to resuscitate him while repositioning the breathing tube, and directed his brother to shout at him. As the separation sensation faded, the wind sound diminished, and he heard his brother and doctor's voices telling him to calm down and that he'd be okay as the room came into focus. The light he experienced had life embodied in it, animating the space itself. He felt he could see into infinity though vision seemed confined to immediate surroundings. The wind sound was amplified and concentrated, part of the natural environment he would have become accustomed to. He knew complete understanding was within the light but was busy trying to reconnect with his physical form. The experience left him knowing consciousness continues, understanding light, love and God are the same, and feeling urgently driven to help others.
