Four-year-old Kimberley was vacationing with her family at a resort with natural hot springs in June 1988. After returning from the hot springs, she told her mother she didn't want to go back when invited, and was instructed to return to their motel room where her father was watching her infant twin sisters. On the way back, Kimberley was distracted and fell into the ice-covered swimming pool. She was underwater for an unknown period before being discovered by a woman staying on the second floor who noticed movement in the ice and investigated, finding Kimberley drowning.
During the drowning, Kimberley experienced herself floating above the scene, watching her body helplessly drowning under the water. She observed herself in a peaceful state without thrashing. The image then faded to black, and she remained in darkness without seeing any tunnels or light. She felt completely detached from her physical form during this time. A guest who had just completed a CPR refresher course that week performed resuscitation on Kimberley's body, which had turned almost the same navy blue color as her jersey. She eventually revived and vomited up her lunch. The medical report stated she had clinically died as her heart had stopped, though doctors believed the icy water's cool temperature helped preserve brain activity and aided in the resuscitation process. Kimberley was transported to Christchurch hospital for overnight observation and testing, being released the next day. She subsequently developed intense fear of drowning that persisted even when wearing arm floaties, though her mother's persistence with swimming lessons eventually helped her overcome this fear. The drowning experience remains her earliest and most vivid childhood memory.
