At age 7, Bart was at a swimming pool holding the edge when his hands slipped and he fell to the 8-foot bottom, unable to reach surface. After initial struggle, he felt complete peace and contentment with the feeling that everything outside was meaningless and illusory. He had nothing to worry about and floated above the pool, seeing umbrella tops and tables. He saw his sisters and watched his brother walk to pool edge, could tell the moment his brother realized he was drowning, heard him call out, and saw him dive in. Bart didn't want to be saved, wanting to stay in the peaceful place, unable to understand why his brother would take him from such a great place back to a world that hadn't been good to him. The experience made him careless and reckless throughout life, having no fear of death since, and he has had to learn to control these impulses.
