Douglas underwent an ERCP procedure on December 27, 2017, to examine blocked bile ducts from gallstones that had reduced his liver function to 3% capacity. Positioned on his stomach with a device holding his mouth open, he had difficulty breathing which he communicated to nurses. Less than a minute later, he told them he couldn't breathe. The procedure was aborted shortly after beginning due to cardiac and respiratory distress requiring resuscitation. Medical staff later appeared flustered, and family members were told he had to be resuscitated after his heart and breathing went into distress.
During the event, Douglas found himself somewhere else without pain or discomfort, surrounded by light from all directions that illuminated everything without shadows or glare. He felt a strong, calm, reassuring presence all around him. Before him, he saw scripture scrolling upward like movie credits, moving at a slow, continuous pace. To the left of the scripture was a distinctly separated area that was empty, black, completely void and absent of anything. He could hear and feel a voice reading the scripture aloud, and had the feeling that all events of his life had been read and were known. He specifically recalled seeing the Gospel of John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." He experienced no fear or uncertainty, only complete calm as he heard and saw the words passing before him. The scripture he had written in sermons was particularly present in his awareness. Though he didn't see Jesus, he felt His presence and could hear Him speaking in his mind. Douglas awakened in recovery to people shouting at him to breathe. The experience strengthened his focus on living, others' lives, and God's Word. He became more conscious of his actions and motives, more observant of his Christianity and service to God, with greater desire to live sin-free and serve others.
