Desmond H, who suffers from Marfan Syndrome affecting his tissue throughout his body, underwent aortic valve replacement surgery in 2014. During the operation, he suffered an unexpected asthma attack and suffocated while unconscious, dying for a few seconds before surgeons could get a ventilator. He experienced himself on the operating table, then saw his mother crying and told her "I love you" though she couldn't hear him. He observed surgeons frantically setting up the ventilator and saw his family in the waiting room - all confirmed post-recovery. He then found himself in what NDErs call "the void" or "Dark Place" - a state without emotion or thoughts yet remaining sentient, with nothing to see, feel, or know. He lost his personality, memories, and emotions completely. Suddenly, a very loud male voice spoke "God" to him slowly and clearly. He was immediately resuscitated and placed in a medically-induced coma for two weeks. Upon waking, his first words were "I heard God!" though he doesn't remember saying it. Recovery took 4 months. Significantly, Desmond had been an antitheist from ages 9-15, hating the Christian God despite not believing in His existence. Through religious process of elimination by 2016, he concluded he heard the Jewish/Christian God (YHWH), noting the booming male voice matched biblical descriptions and that "God" declared Himself by that name rather than other deities' specific names.
