Charles K was working at a telephone company in the Bronx when he was struck by vehicles while crossing the street during his coffee break. A blue van's mirror hit him first, spinning him backwards, then a maroon van with silver bumpers struck him. He landed between two parked cars, curled on his left side. Suddenly, he found himself floating above his body, looking down at himself and the entire scene from above. Despite his body facing the street, he could impossibly see a man walking up the sidewalk behind him who would later help him up. He experienced profound blissfulness and wanted to stay in that state forever. He observed the cloudy day and could see over the nearby building. When thoughts of his pregnant wife arose, he decided he couldn't go yet and dove back into his body in a flash. The man who he had seen approaching helped him up and back into the building. Charles was taken to the hospital where scans revealed his entire left side was black and blue but no broken bones or internal injuries. He insisted on going home to his wife despite medical advice to stay. The experience left him with absolute certainty about life after death and the existence of a separate consciousness that survives bodily death.
