Billy experienced a near-death episode in 1992 as a young person with diabetes. After leaving his school bus and walking toward his home, he collapsed on his lawn due to what he believed was low blood sugar from his diabetic condition. The medical emergency caused him to lose consciousness suddenly.
Upon falling, Billy immediately found himself looking down at his own body from above. He thought to himself that it must be his diabetes causing him to go low. While observing his body from this elevated perspective, he experienced a profound realization about having a purpose in life and understood that he could not continue floating upward anymore. He made a conscious decision that he should head back down and return to his body. He felt sadness about his state of being as he observed himself lying on the face of the earth. During the experience, he was at his highest level of consciousness when at the maximum height above his body. Time seemed to move slower than usual, and his senses were more vivid than normal. He entered what he described as the sky, an unfamiliar and strange place. He felt both sadness and peace during the experience, along with feelings of relief, calmness, and happiness. The experience had a lasting impact on Billy, who since then has felt a powerful calling in his life, though he admits he has yet to discover exactly what that calling is. He gained special knowledge that he had a reason to be here, and the experience convinced him that an afterlife definitely exists, having seen his body from a place where he was not physically stationed.
