Begitte experienced a near-death episode during a violent criminal attack on May 25, 2009, when she was strangled nearly to death by a man she had met. During the strangulation, she initially tried to fight back and felt angry, but as she became unable to resist further, she experienced complete calm and was unable to move for a long time.
During the experience, she felt as if she was not present in her own body. She then floated above and looked down, observing both herself lying on the bed and the man next to her who was trying to revive her. She described a quiet and serene feeling while out of her body, but noted that being pulled back was difficult and unpleasant, as the out-of-body state felt better. Her consciousness felt keener during the experience, with everything appearing clearly. She experienced a deep sense of peace and felt nothing touched her anymore. Though she remained in the earthly realm during her OBE, it did not feel like the reality she was accustomed to. She experienced enhanced vision and hearing, with images that she would never forget and an ability to hear even while outside her body. She felt complete peace, calm, and joy, describing herself as feeling like a cloud. She also experienced a sense of unity with the world and understood that there is more to existence than what can be measured and weighed. Following the experience, she reports large life changes, feeling she is more selective about who she lets into her life and takes care to use her time on Earth well. She also developed a sensitivity to when someone close to her is dying.
