Van stopped to help at a car accident near his office when he was seriously shocked while lifting a fallen street light from the roof of one of the damaged vehicles. The powerful electrical shock sent him flying backward through the air, initiating an extraordinary near-death experience that would profoundly impact his understanding of life and death.
Immediately upon being electrocuted, Van found himself traveling at very high speed through a dark tunnel. As he moved through this darkness, he observed a spot of light at the tunnel's end that grew progressively larger as he approached. Upon emerging from the tunnel, he entered a large vaulted room filled with extraordinary rays of light containing golden specks suspended in the air like luminous dust particles. Within this radiant space, he encountered hundreds of people, including his recently deceased mother and maternal grandmother, with whom he made direct eye contact and felt profound peace. He was then led outside to an area resembling an open campus bathed in vibrant light, where he was brought before a figure seated on an elevated stone throne with steps leading up to it. Though he received a message from this being, the specific content was later forgotten. The experience included remarkable sensory enhancements - the nighttime accident scene transformed into a well-lit environment with rays of light, his hearing became muted yet clear, and he experienced time acceleration with everything happening simultaneously. He felt incredible emotions including euphoria, enlightenment, and love, along with a sense of unity with the universe and understanding of everything, including a secret knowledge he could no longer recall. When sent back against his will, he fell rapidly through darkness toward a growing point of light that revealed itself as the street light, seeing his body lying face-down in blood before re-entering it. Upon return, Van transitioned instantly from feeling light and pain-free to experiencing heaviness and intense pain from his injuries. A security guard witnessed his revival and instructed him not to move. The experience left him with increased difficulty relating to daily work tasks and strained his marriage, while confirming his Christian faith and belief in an afterlife.
