Ute experienced a cardiac arrest following severe back pain that began the evening before. The pain, initially dismissed as strain from carrying heavy loads, persisted through the night. The next morning, after sending her son to school, she suddenly began vomiting and screaming in pain. Her in-laws, living two houses away, heard her distress and called emergency services. She collapsed on the living room floor in cardiac arrest from a front wall myocardial infarction.
During the cardiac arrest requiring CPR, Ute had a profound out-of-body experience. She found herself leaning against a table while observing two doctors attempting to resuscitate her body below. From this detached perspective, she watched the medical team performing CPR on her lifeless form. Throughout the observation, her thoughts were dominated by concern for her mother who had lost Ute's brother Achim the previous year. She kept thinking "You can't go now. You can't do this to mum. Last year Achim and now me? I can't do this to mum." The powerful love and concern for her mother's wellbeing became her anchor to life. Unable to bear the thought of her mother losing another child so soon after her brother's death, Ute made a conscious decision to return to life. Her determination not to cause her mother additional grief motivated her return to her body. This was her last memory before regaining consciousness. After the experience, Ute's religious beliefs evolved - she maintained even stronger faith in God while distancing herself from organized church. The NDE convinced her that dying itself is not painful, a message she has shared with others to provide comfort about the dying process.
