In November 2010, Ryan experienced surgical complications requiring defibrillation while under general anesthesia. During clinical death with cessation of breathing and heart function, he found himself looking down at his own body on the operating table. He could see the physicians reacting to the emergency situation. He heard things the surgeons were saying, though he doesn't remember the conversations in detail. In an instant, he was back under anesthesia. The experience was characterized by feeling ultra-alert and at peace on a serene plane that calmed him. He experienced time as meaningless, being allowed to simply "be." He felt immense calm, incredible peace and joy, and unity with the world. The experience occurred on an ethereal rather than physical plane, which he describes as clearly mystical. Following the NDE, Ryan changed from Lutheran to Agnostic, believing in a higher undefined power. He graduated university in 2019 and reduced some medications. He now considers himself an empath and knows that death is a peaceful journey.
