Robin was a Deputy Sheriff responding to an active shooter on October 26, 2013. She was shot with an AK47, with the bullet shattering her left femur, femoral artery and vein. As firefighters worked on her and she was bleeding out, she felt herself above the scene with a bright light surrounding her head. She could see 360 degrees of blinding light like staring at the sun, encompassing everything. While above the scene, she could hear the firefighters working on her and knew they thought she was dying, but she felt peacefully confident she would survive. She kept thinking "I'm still here, I'm still here" though the firefighters later confirmed she didn't speak and was motionless with eyes fixed open, apparently dead. She coded out during this time. The experience was characterized by extreme peace and calm, with time standing still. After returning, she has experienced large life changes including depression and PTSD, but also gained intense compassion for humanity and a deep appreciation for life. The NDE made her more sensitive to harsh words, lights and sounds, and changed her from a handshaker to someone who wants to hug everyone.
