Robert's canoe overturned in a cold lake in May 1972. Unable to swim, he initially panicked but soon became calm as he began drowning after sinking and swallowing water. He felt incredibly peaceful and thought "This is not so bad!" During his drowning experience, he was pulled into and partway through a tunnel where he was surrounded by a brilliant yellowish-white light that seemed to pull him in like a vacuum. He had not yet reached the end of the tunnel when suddenly everything faded and he was swooshed back out. He lost all memory of the event initially, only recovering it after being rescued when he awoke in his underwear under a blanket beside a campfire. The experience left him feeling that death is a peaceful journey, and the plane entered during death is unexplainable - something that must be experienced to understand. The peace and calm he felt was unbelievable, and he experienced himself as pure thought without physical form.
