Dr. Robert Cole, a physician with training in neurology and psychiatry, had a respiratory arrest following cervical spine surgery. The day after successful surgery, while walking with a nurse, his throat swelled shut and he collapsed unable to breathe. An emergency cricothyroidotomy was performed after intubation failed. His experience began with brilliant white light without reflection or glare, accompanied by quiet jubilation, peace, and incredible serenity - what he described as glory in its warmest sense. Without physical sensations, he felt he was conversing with God and receiving important insights about existence that he must communicate to others. He understood there is one loving God for all people. He was told it wasn't his time and he had more "to be" rather than "to do." Returning to consciousness, he heard paper ripping and voices, including someone saying "he's had a respiratory arrest." Hospital records confirmed his pO2 dropped to 60% at 10:30am before recovering after tracheostomy. He spent weeks recovering, initially unable to remember presidents or do simple calculations due to medication. As a physician, he has since studied NDEs extensively, reading works by Kübler-Ross, Ring, and others, and incorporated questions about such experiences into his psychiatric practice. Two patients have spontaneously reported similar experiences they had told no one else about.
