Michiel W was stabbed in 1976 during an altercation outside a pool hall, suffering a punctured lung and ruptured atria and pericardium. While being rushed to the hospital, unable to breathe with air coming from the wound, he began having an out-of-body experience. He found himself flying above the car, then drawn through a tunnel toward an immense, all-encompassing light with no shadows. He became aware of vaguely familiar people from his past moving by at a distance. In this state, God spoke directly to him, asking "Do you want to live or die?" Understanding the gravity of the question, Michiel replied he wanted to live as he still had things to do. God responded, "Don't worry, everything will be OK." After this promise, he re-entered his body and became aware of arriving at the hospital. He experienced two cardiac arrests - one during surgery where his sternum was cut for manual heart massage, and another post-surgery. The experience was preceded by years of preparation, including studying the Book of Job in high school despite his teacher's objections. Since then, he has lived with the certainty of God's promise through numerous challenges including Hepatitis C from blood transfusion and eventually a liver transplant in 2017.
