During a grand mal seizure in 1995, Audra experienced what she describes as a negative NDE. She suddenly found herself falling down a narrow hole barely wider than her body, scrambling against crumbling tar-like walls that smelled strongly and felt rough. Unable to see above or below, she was surrounded by flying rocky dust that prevented breathing. As she shouted for help, she fell faster. The experience was entirely distressing and frightening. After being told by paramedics about her seizure, she struggled for years with the fear that she was going to hell, questioning what she had done to deserve such a destination. This led to intense self-examination and efforts to be more righteous. She had previously been in a medically-induced coma at age 17 with no experience, which made her initially skeptical of NDEs. The negative experience has made her more religious but less happy, living in fear-based bondage trying to earn her place in the afterlife.
