Michael, a trained EMT, went to the emergency room with extreme stomach pain rated 10+ on pain scale. He was given multiple doses of Dilaudid for pain, receiving four doses total in a short timeframe which caused an overdose. He went into respiratory arrest and stopped breathing for several minutes. During this time, he found himself in a black void experiencing no time, no pain, and nothing - like being in a black room without visible walls. He felt the presence of several people around him though he couldn't see anyone, experiencing pure blackness and absence of light. After doctors called a code and began resuscitation, he remembers traveling back to his body and seeing a doctor on top of him yelling to start breathing. He coded again during CT scan but had no experience that time. The experience left him with stage 2 kidney disease from oxygen deprivation and PTSD, including panic attacks in dark spaces like movie theaters. Unlike positive NDEs, he found his experience entirely distressing and feels regret about returning to life.
