During childbirth after long labor with the baby stuck in the birth canal, both mother and child went into distress requiring emergency cesarean. The epidural failed to block pain, and when given general anesthesia, Lori knew they would save the baby but lose her. She found herself hovering above the operating table watching them hold her crying baby boy above her abdomen. She heard a nurse say "Uh oh, there goes her heart!" followed by calling for emergency assistance STAT. She woke hours later in a hospital room, with no one ever telling her that her heart had stopped during surgery. Years later when she mentioned it to her husband, he was shocked she knew about it, confirming the incident had occurred. The experience was calm observation without emotion. She had a second, less vivid NDE years later. The experience gave her greater belief in an afterlife and confirmed her hope of life after death, though it didn't significantly change her religious practices, transitioning from agnostic to Protestant Christianity.
