Tom was experiencing chest pains at his apartment in Michigan and went to the emergency room. While a nurse was explaining the EKG monitor to him, the line flat-lined and he fell back on the bed. He remembered the experience as painless, feeling very relaxed and peaceful. Everything went black and he had the feeling of being in a tunnel. In the distance at the end of the tunnel, he could see a bright light. Before reaching the light, he regained consciousness to find half a dozen doctors and nurses hovering over him, with one pounding on his chest and another holding defibrillators. The next day, the doctor told him he had been without a heartbeat for about a minute. The experience was brief but profound - he experienced the classic tunnel with bright light at the end, felt incredible peace, and no longer feared death. Following the NDE, Tom's religious beliefs changed significantly; he stopped attending his Southern Baptist church and years later began practicing Zen Buddhism for meditation and mindfulness rather than as a religion.
