A Chinese medical team surveyed survivors of the catastrophic 1976 Tang Shan earthquake that killed over 240,000 people. Among 81 validated NDE cases, survivors reported remarkably consistent experiences. Over half remembered being buried under debris with no panic, instead feeling calm, comfortable, and even blissful. Many experienced rapid life reviews showing joyful memories like childhood play, marriages, and achievements. Nearly half experienced consciousness separation from their bodies, describing their "self" as lighter than air, floating above their physical forms. Some reported being perfectly normal in spirit despite physical disabilities. About one-third traveled through cave-like tunnels with water sounds, moving toward distant light. One-fourth encountered non-human forms or deceased relatives whose life continued after death. One survivor, Mr. Lee, was clinically dead for 14 minutes and experienced body detachment, plunging through darkness with unexplained noises, and brief life review. Mr. Wang saw a man in traditional robes lead him through a black hole to a golden underground palace. The survey documented 40 types of NDE elements including weightlessness, universe integration, and time cessation. Of the 81 participants, 47 underwent lasting personality changes, becoming more mellow, optimistic, and less judgmental even 10-20 years later.
