John was a water-meter reader who fell off a car after a coworker popped the clutch while he was sitting on the front fender. He fell face-first onto blacktop, fracturing his skull and suffering severe facial injuries. His supervisor reported he hadn't been breathing for several minutes. During this time, John experienced hovering about 10 feet above his body, observing his supervisor holding his head in his lap and screaming for the ambulance to hurry. He then found himself in a foggy but not foggy place with no defined borders or colors, experiencing profound peace without pain and no panic despite not breathing. He heard an EMT saying he couldn't stabilize him in the ambulance. Later in the emergency room, he heard someone ask "Do we know the next of kin?" while he was on a gurney with a sheet over his head. He sat up, startling a nurse who screamed and dropped her tray. He provided his wife and father's contact information before passing out again, waking two days later with extensive injuries. The experience transformed his view of death, removing his fear and providing certainty that something exists after death.
