Around age 10 in 1955, James was swimming at a state park lake without knowing how to swim properly. While playing in the water, he kept venturing into deeper areas, intending to stop when the water reached his chin. Unaware of an immediate drop-off just past the buoyed area, he suddenly went under and began thrashing desperately to reach the surface.
After struggling briefly, James experienced a tremendous jerk within his body, which he describes as a natural part of the dying process. Suddenly, he was outside his body floating in a semi-conscious state, completely content and no longer struggling. He felt unbelievably happy, enveloped by a loving presence, with no sense of time - just the experience of the present moment with no future or past. His father noticed the situation and came into the lake fully clothed to rescue him, dragging him from the deep end to shore. James remembers being disappointed at being pulled back because he didn't want to leave that peaceful place. His father later dried money from his wallet on the sand, saying "you were just about a goner." The experience left James with lasting impressions about consciousness beyond the body and universal connection. He felt there was no individuality in that state - the personal didn't exist since we are everything. The memory remains vivid even after decades, feeling more real than other childhood memories.
