Heikki's stomach ruptured due to internal pressure from a previous fundoplication surgery that prevented gas from escaping, combined with air from his sleep apnea machine and intestinal blockage. After being taken to the emergency room on April 21, 2016, attempts to insert a naso-gastric tube failed due to excessive stomach pressure. He lost consciousness during an MRI scan where his heart and breathing stopped. He received CPR for 65 minutes, followed by emergency surgery to release the pressure from his stomach.
During the experience, Heikki had a strong sensation of motherly love he had never experienced before. He has a lingering memory of a giant white circle with his deceased mother and brother standing behind it. He could not cross to the other side of the circle, experiencing what appeared to be a boundary between life and death. After the surgical operation took about 2 hours, he was placed in an artificial coma in the ICU. When brought back to consciousness, the overwhelming feeling of motherly love persisted. His spouse was told by doctors that they had had significant problems with him during the procedure. He remained in ICU until the next day, then spent 10 more days in a regular unit before going home. The experience left him with a changed perspective on life and death, feeling that deceased loved ones exist in the spirit world. He mentioned similarities to Anita Moorjani's NDE experience, particularly regarding the feelings upon awakening from coma.
