On Memorial Day 2004, Heidi went into labor with her third child but experienced unusual pain that intensified when sitting or lying down. After delivery, the placenta would not detach despite multiple attempts by the nurse pulling on the umbilical cord. When the doctor arrived and pulled, the umbilical cord detached from the placenta still inside her. After multiple painful attempts to manually remove the placenta, she was taken to surgery as she was bleeding out. Her heart stopped in the operating room due to complications from Mitral Valve Prolapse.
During the experience, Heidi woke up in what she calls "home" - heaven. She had no body but was herself, surrounded by angels, loved ones, Jesus, Mother Mary, and God within a radiant, beautiful light. All were connected as one in this warm, golden-white light described as bubbly and effervescent like champagne. Communication occurred through thought without words, with questions answered before she could finish thinking them. She received three repeated messages: she was unconditionally loved; everything is always as it's supposed to be; and everything would always be alright. She understood that if she didn't return, her children and family would be okay. Though she wanted to stay, she was not given the option. The doctor woke her by yelling, and she felt angry at being back in her cold body and the physical world. Medical records obtained ten years later confirmed her heart had stopped during surgery. Her husband initially dismissed the experience as crazy, leading her to remain silent about it for 6-7 years. The experience transformed her life, helping her develop self-love and eventually leave her abusive marriage.
