At age 16, Gwen was kicked in the head by a horse and lost consciousness. The impact caused severe injuries including a partially detached retina, multiple chips to the right zygomatic arch, and a bone-deep laceration. She was unconscious for 5-10 minutes after experiencing severe head trauma from the horse's hoof.
During the experience, Gwen found herself floating about 8 feet above her body, watching as her friend Gene crossed her arms over her chest and pulled her body out of the stall. She observed the horse nuzzling her body and saw Gene directing Steve to call for help. She experienced herself as a translucent gray cloud without physical form. When she turned around, she found herself in a limitless gray fog with a multiple presence that communicated telepathically, offering her the choice to stay or return, mentioning there were things they wanted her to accomplish. Her predominant sensation was overwhelming contentment and well-being within this gray cloud realm. The communication had an impartial, almost detached quality. When she chose to return, a roaring whirlpool/tunnel opened beside her, pulling her back with rushing sounds. She anticipated pain upon re-entry. Upon regaining consciousness, she found her arms crossed over her chest exactly as she had observed from above, with the horse still nuzzling her vigorously. The medical injuries confirmed the severity of the trauma, requiring significant recovery time.
