Robyn choked on food at lunch, completely blocking her airway. Unable to breathe, speak, or cough, she tried unsuccessfully to clear the obstruction. She attempted to reach her boss in the next office but collapsed, falling backwards and hitting her head on a filing cabinet. Her boss found her on her back with her face red and bluish, and performed the Heimlich maneuver four times before the obstruction came up.
During her experience, Robyn floated up into a horizontal tunnel with a high-pitched buzzing sound that didn't bother her. She felt overwhelming bliss and contentment, comparing it to the complete sensory involvement of diving into water. She slowly floated forward without any sense of time or urgency, drawn to the light ahead. She turned back and saw where she had "popped up" into the tunnel. She became aware of something happening to her right and observed what seemed to be the back of herself looking at something intently - a strange sensation of being separate from another version of herself in the tunnel, as an observer of another her. She continued floating toward the light with increasing anticipation and happiness. As she neared the end of the tunnel, she suddenly felt a sucking sensation and was pulled back into her body. Robyn observed herself in the tunnel as if split into two beings - one with feeling and one with thinking. She saw the tunnel entrance where she had entered and the light at the end she was approaching. She experienced everything with heightened brightness and visual awareness. The experience left Robyn profoundly changed. She no longer fears death and experiences emotional detachment from life, viewing it as possibly a simulation. She developed a brain injury from the hypoxia and concussion, affecting her work and cognitive processing. She feels she returned for an unknown purpose and longs daily for the bliss she experienced in the tunnel.
