Raúl was a flight instructor in Peru who experienced a catastrophic accident during training. The plane went out of control in an inverted spin, dropping below 10,000 feet. He ordered the cadet to eject, but when Raúl ejected, his right leg was caught and severed his femur. The parachute became tangled with the ejection seat, causing him to plunge into the sea and sink to the bottom, trapped in the parachute cords. He began drowning and losing consciousness as everything went black.
During his near-death experience, Raúl felt a state of ecstasy and relaxation as he came out of his body and went through an illuminated tunnel. He experienced his existence in milliseconds and felt his family very close, sensing their sadness. Time became confused with everything happening at once. He passed through what he described as a time tunnel similar to film depictions, surrounded by darkness and brilliant light. He experienced incredible peace, ecstasy, and tranquility after an initial silence. His vision was amazed and astonished by everything happening from this brilliant tunnel, describing it as a chord uniting his soul with the body. From outside his body, Raúl observed the brilliant tunnel and experienced a review of his life passing before him in milliseconds. He mentally called out to God for strength for his children, and felt a strong impact when his soul returned to his body. He was then freed from the parachute cords and reached the surface. After swimming for 3.5 hours with a broken leg to reach shore, Raúl was rescued by helicopter. His recovery took a year with three additional operations. The experience eliminated his fear of death and made him more spiritual, compassionate, and sensitive. He believes he was allowed to return because of his responsibility to raise his children.
