Poelen suffered a severe bicycle accident while training for a cross-country race, flying head over heels and hitting his chin on sandy ground. According to the neurologist, he would likely have died if the ground had been harder. During the fall, everything went dark as he flew up high.
During his out-of-body experience, Poelen found himself in the cosmos where he could see Earth as a huge ball. He described the experience as spectacular and hard to explain in words. When he realized this was impossible since he should be on the ground after falling, he immediately flew at incredible speed toward Earth in a fraction of a second. However, instead of returning directly to his body, he lingered in the air between the trees above his body. He then thought he needed to go lower and shot toward his body. He re-entered his body head first, then slower through the rest of his body, with his left leg taking several minutes to fully reintegrate. The primary observation was seeing Earth from a cosmic perspective as a huge ball while his body lay injured below. He also observed his body from above, hovering between the trees before deliberately descending to re-enter it. The re-entry process was gradual, taking several minutes for complete reintegration. Upon attempting to stand, Poelen discovered he couldn't move, with total numbness in his hands, arms, feet and legs. One year later, he had another out-of-body experience where two entities showed him how to travel on "that side" and how thoughts function. He has since used this knowledge to help others with problems. The experience made him more spiritual than religious, more compassionate and sensitive.
