Patrick was receiving a blood transfusion as part of his leukemia treatment when the nurses improperly filtered the blood, causing a severe allergic reaction. His skin became suddenly hot and itchy all over, and then his heart stopped. During this cardiac arrest, Patrick experienced an out-of-body experience where he found himself awake and sitting in the transfusion chair. He got up from the seat, turned around 180 degrees, and saw his body still in the chair. Everything appeared brighter with increased colors but less definition, as if someone had turned up the brightness while reducing clarity. He observed the nurses rush in to revive him and saw one nurse run in with adrenaline and inject it into his IV. The whole experience lasted several seconds to a minute from his perspective, though the actual cardiac arrest was approximately 60 seconds. When the adrenaline was administered, he suddenly found himself back in his body, confused about where he was. Since this experience, Patrick reports having almost no dreams or nightmares when he sleeps, a marked change from before the NDE.
