In 1982, Graça experienced cardiac and respiratory arrest due to an allergic reaction to aspirin. She had taken aspirin for a severe headache, and seconds later couldn't breathe as an invisible claw seemed to pluck out her heart. Despite opening her mouth wide, she couldn't get enough air to her lungs, experiencing excessive chest pain before everything stopped. Her husband, Manuel, was present and attempted to revive her using blood pressure monitoring and a mirror to check for breathing, finding no signs of life.
During her clinical death, Graça observed the scene from near the ceiling at an impossible height. She watched her husband's desperate attempts to help, seeing him cry and repeatedly check for vital signs. From this elevated position, she noticed a dust-covered blue document with 25 lines on top of the closet - a certificate she had been searching for. After feeling "sucked" from this position, she entered total darkness where she heard multiple voices telling her not to be afraid and that they were there to help. Though she couldn't see them, she felt their presence as energy like static electricity or magnetism. The beings guided her through the darkness toward a point of light that grew as they advanced. She traveled at incredible speed through space, seeing Earth and Moon receding, passing through cosmic dust and stars in parallel, infinite planes. She witnessed colors that don't exist in Earth's palette, layered like transparent, superimposed plaques. Upon reaching the source light, she experienced waves of love so profound that all the love she had known on Earth couldn't compare to even a grain of sand to the desert. The light communicated mentally, ordering her return because her husband and son needed her, stating she had duties to fulfill and her mission hadn't ended. Upon return, her husband confirmed all her observations and retrieved the dust-covered document from the closet top exactly as she had described. A doctor later confirmed she had experienced cardiac and respiratory arrest due to aspirin allergy and was lucky to have survived, noting she would never have arrived at the hospital alive had they attempted to go.
