On June 10, 2010, while living in Australia, Gerardo attempted suicide by strangulation while home alone. His wife had gone to buy him a diet coke from a store 300 meters away, and he estimated she would return in about 15 minutes. Using a long string, he strangled himself, experiencing terrible pain with bulging eyes from blood congestion and neck bleeding from the string's hold.
His passing over was immediate. He found himself in a place of light and brightness, submerged in white light, seeing himself from different angles. When he arrived in that place, he found himself with hands open down along his legs, amazed by where he was. He encountered a stairway with walls lit by white light. The stairway felt narrow, and he immediately refused to climb it, thinking "Here is GOD. The stair is narrow. Therefore my Lord, I'm a sinner. I don't feel the strength with me. I'm afraid of you." He began to climb the first two steps, surrounded by brightness. He could feel his consciousness returning and found himself lying on the bedroom floor. He removed the string and started breathing again with great difficulty. After a while, he could breathe better, and about half an hour later, his eyes began returning to their sockets as he psychologically relaxed. The experience transformed him, leaving him feeling more tranquil with no more disagreement. He now feels increased sensibility and carefulness toward others, living with a sense that nothing on earth compares to what he experienced during his passing over. He gained a certainty about the afterlife and lost his fear of death.
