In August 1972, at age 18, Francie experienced respiratory arrest following surgery for a car accident. She had undergone surgery for internal bleeding and splenectomy, with multiple pelvic fractures and pneumothorax. Post-surgery, she was given morphine for pain and had an adverse reaction, likely due to dosage, causing respiratory arrest. The head nurse later stated they thought she was gone even after CPR was initiated. Her father witnessed the event and she later told him what she observed.
During the experience, Francie found herself aware but outside her body with her father present but unable to hear her repeated attempts to communicate that she was okay. She watched him use various methods to check for life signs - measuring blood pressure multiple times with no reading, using a mirror at her nose and mouth with no vapor appearing. She was puzzled why these devices showed no signs of life when she felt fine. She observed everything from an elevated position and with expanded 360-degree vision that seemed impossible. The experience had two distinct phases. In the first "Bright Light Phase," she moved through what wasn't literally a tunnel but more like having no peripheral vision with a magnetic pull toward a warm, all-encompassing light. She felt it was the clearest purpose she'd ever had in life. In the second "Bodyless Existence" phase, she was acutely aware of her father's anxiety and fear, feeling his emotions as if they were her own while remaining calm herself, assuming a role of reassurance though he couldn't hear her. When she opened her eyes, she immediately said "Wow, what a trip!" - words she had chosen before opening her eyes, somehow knowing exactly what to say to reassure her father. Her father confirmed she stayed up all night talking after the experience. Green living things glowed for weeks afterward as if trees, plants and eyes "hopped" with life. Her doctor, also her running partner, was emotional when he later confirmed how close to death she had been.
