In 2004, Eddie was working on rebuilding a guitar amplifier when he was electrocuted by a high-voltage capacitor inside the amp. The electrical shock caused him to black out, experiencing clinical death with cessation of breathing and heart function. His neighbor found him and performed CPR, successfully resuscitating him while paramedics were called to the scene.
During his clinical death, Eddie initially experienced absolute nothingness and sensed nothing at all. Then, with what sounded like a flutter of wings and a whoosh of air above him, he saw a brilliant blue-white light that appeared as a circle that kept growing larger. The circle continued expanding until it opened up completely, allowing him to see clearly into it with enhanced clarity that he described as "high-definition and magnified by billions." Standing within this circle of light were his musician idols, Leo Fender and Les Paul, both deceased guitar innovators. The clarity of vision and hearing was incredibly enhanced, with voices sounding super-rich and clear. He felt intense peace and a sense of being welcome that he had never experienced on earth. Leo and Les told him how pleased they were that he played their guitars so well, but that it wasn't his time to pass yet. They said he still had much more to give on earth. Despite his reluctance to leave such a beautiful place filled with incredible happiness and joy, he suddenly felt a vacuum pull him down hard. He awoke in his workshop surrounded by paramedics, his neighbor, and two police officers, feeling disoriented with a throbbing chest. Initially angry about leaving the beautiful realm, he later became deeply grateful to his neighbor for saving his life. As a lifelong atheist, the experience left him still not believing in God but open to the possibility of an afterlife.
