In June 1998, Dyan experienced a near-death event following complications from a burst appendix with ensuing peritonitis. After a second surgery, she developed severe complications and spent five weeks in the critical care unit, ultimately requiring three surgeries total. Her experience occurred during this critical period when her life was in serious danger.
During her NDE, she was initially enveloped in a gray mist before being surrounded by a brilliant light that she could not adequately describe - neither white nor blue, but brilliant and beautiful. She experienced an overwhelming feeling that all was good and that she was going home to "Father," though she was uncertain who Father was at the time. She felt held in the arms of Father with a love she couldn't comprehend, describing it as awesome and all-encompassing. She received a substantial amount of information during the experience, including reminders about personal flaws that needed correction and a significant message that "Judgment is not mine." While in this state of perfect peace and love, she heard her children's voices - first her oldest daughter asking her to stay, which didn't concern her as she felt her daughters would be okay without her. However, when she heard her young son say "Mom please stay," she felt he wouldn't be okay without her due to his young age, which influenced her return. The aftermath included lasting effects where living things that were alive glowed for weeks afterward, with trees, plants, and eyes appearing to "hop" with life. Her doctor, who was also her running partner, later confirmed how close to death she had been, becoming emotional when telling her "You are so lucky, you know you almost died!" The experience left her with certainty about God's existence and removed her fear of death.
