During childbirth, Merrideth experienced such intense pain that she came out of her body and stopped breathing for several minutes. She found herself floating at the ceiling, feeling weightless and completely at peace - a feeling she had never experienced before. She observed the medical scene below: a nurse running for equipment, the doctor screaming at her to breathe, and her mother crying while holding her hand. She saw only darkness except where her body was. A divine being (possibly Jesus or an angel) entered and told her telepathically she had to return as it wasn't her time. She argued, not wanting to return to a world of pain and meanness. The being said if she didn't return, her daughter would be raised without parents. She agreed to return for her unborn child's sake and was promised no one would hurt her like before and she would have a good life. She was guided back into her body and had to relearn how to breathe.
