Marty was 12 years old on his first day of secondary school when he was strangled by an older student as a prank in the school toilets. After being released, he walked toward the wash basins then collapsed, hitting his head twice. During his unconscious state, he experienced a peaceful scene sitting on a grass hill overlooking a shallow stream with an old stone bridge. He observed Victorian-dressed children playing around the bridge and felt complete peace and tranquility. When he suddenly remembered he was supposed to be in school, he immediately awakened on the floor surrounded by schoolchildren, with one slapping his face. They told him they thought he was dead. The experience left him with a lasting memory of profound peace.
