In June 1987, following open heart surgery at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Waylan experienced a profound NDE while in recovery. Medical staff were aware he was dying but could not understand why. Through intense prayer, he instantly found himself in the presence of God, experiencing indescribable love and peace. All fear vanished as he was reassured that he was all right. He recognized many people present, though not all were familiar to him consciously.
A female preacher he had met once a year prior stepped forward, and together they traveled through space, walls, and closed doors to pray for specific people in different areas of the hospital. Waylan noted he could not tell he was out of his body - everything looked and felt normal. He compared this to the type of body Jesus had after resurrection, able to pass through walls yet also eat, drink, and be touched by companions. The experience of God's love was so profound that for years afterward, he could not recount the story without crying. Upon return, medical staff were giving him blood, explaining that the machine processing it during surgery had damaged his blood. He intended to verify whether the female preacher had died around that time but never followed through.
