In September 1980, six-year-old Mark was visiting his father and family at a lake. While running on a long pier to join his sisters, he slipped on the wet surface, slid under the side railing, and fell into deep water. Unable to swim, he sank, came up once, then sank again and never resurfaced on his own. He remembers standing flat-footed on the lake bottom in complete peace, looking around in awe at the beautiful underwater scene - plants swaying with the current and fish swimming past. From a distance, he saw a bright light approaching closer and closer. Just as the light was about to consume him, he woke up choking on water with someone performing CPR. His sister had dove in to find and rescue him. What seemed like a long time underwater was actually brief. The experience brought profound peace and joy, with extremely vivid vision showing the underwater world in high definition clarity. Mark felt united with the world and understood that death shouldn't be feared. Following the NDE, he experienced visits from spirits or beings (usually three at a time), recurring dreams, and developed the ability to feel spirits' presence and sense evil in strangers. Remarkably, he experiences uncontrollable crying and overwhelming spiritual feelings specifically when entering Catholic churches, despite not being raised Catholic. When visiting aquariums, he feels a strong desire to return to his NDE experience.
