Four days before her 16th birthday in May 1976, Marina suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in her bathroom when workers had removed the exhaust pipe from the water heater without warning the family. After becoming dizzy while washing her hair, she lost consciousness. She found herself in a long tunnel, moving forward without a body, and realized she was dying. An intense battle ensued between Marina and death, which she visualized as pulling a rope with a flag in the middle. She fought with extraordinary strength that surprised her, especially given her normally weak hands. The struggle continued until a bright light appeared and asked, "Marina, are you ready to die?" She responded, "No, no. I'm only 16 years old and I still haven't done anything good." She then felt herself returning to life as death gave up on her. Upon regaining consciousness, she found medical staff trying to remove her clothes, which she initially misinterpreted as an assault attempt due to her confused state. The ambulance had arrived and, according to her mother, Marina was pronounced clinically dead in the ambulance. The experience eliminated her fear of death and led to expanded religious exploration beyond her Protestant upbringing, particularly into Hindu and Buddhist concepts including reincarnation, though she maintained her belief in Jesus.
