On Thanksgiving night 1997, Bernard was walking to a party when a car pulled up and a masked man got out with a gun. The man held the gun to Bernard's head for about thirty seconds. Bernard told him, "If you're gonna shoot, go ahead. What you waiting for?" He then saw only the fire from the gun barrel and didn't feel his body hit the ground. The attacker continued shooting him while he was down, then ran to the car, looked back, and shot once more before driving off.
During the shooting, Bernard found himself back at his house standing on the porch. It was dark and extremely quiet - quieter than he had ever experienced. From across the street, he heard a little girl's voice in his head saying "Daddy let's go home now." He responded "No." She repeated the request two more times, and each time he said "No." After the third exchange, he was suddenly back in his body with the gunman still standing above him shooting. He was able to raise up and look at the attacker as the final shot was fired. Bernard believes divine intervention saved him. The doctors couldn't understand how the bullets curved around his neck, missing his throat, spine, and head. He describes the little girl as having no relationship to him, but her voice seemed to offer him a choice between staying or returning. He felt like he was given the option to go or come back. Since the experience, Bernard reports having psychic abilities, specifically being able to see and hear spirits. He has no fear of death and feels at peace with himself. While he was atheist before and remains atheist, he now acknowledges something gave him a choice and believes an afterlife definitely exists. He considers earthly life less meaningful than before but maintains his compassion toward others.
