Bene was staying at her in-laws' home when she went to take a shower in a bathroom with a leaking gas boiler. Her in-laws had previously fainted from the gas leak but hadn't warned her about it. While in the bathroom, she suddenly felt strong pain in her belly, thought it might be her period, then passed out. Her spouse found her lifeless in the shower and attempted resuscitation with his father's help. They performed heart massage and her spouse slapped her face trying to wake her, but she was gone. He was preparing to tell her parents she had died.
During her cardiac arrest, Bene opened her eyes in a different place. She was lying on her left side in what resembled a cave with soft, subdued light. She wondered if it might have been a tunnel. She felt no pain, heat, or cold, but was aware of her environment and experienced a strange atmosphere. The place provided a sense of calm and relief, with no fear present. From very far away, she heard a voice calling her first name. The voice got closer and closer while she was simultaneously being forcefully but painlessly sucked back into her body. The suction was primarily at the level of her brain. When she opened her eyes, she saw her spouse slapping her and calling her name, confirming she was back in her body. Since the experience, Bene has no fear of death. She knows there is something after death and feels this knowledge is a gift. Two years after the NDE, she moved, changed her work, and experienced significant life changes. She reports increased compassion toward others and a belief that earthly lives are probably meaningful and significant.
