Laura underwent minor surgery under general anesthesia when her larynx began to spasm after intubation, causing acute hypoxia. She arrived at the emergency room with oxygen saturation of 80 and blood pressure of 50/40, where her heart stopped briefly. During this clinical death, she experienced looking down at herself watching the resuscitation efforts. She felt warm, happy, and safe during the experience. A deceased person she was very close to appeared with her, looking at her lovingly. She wanted to stay with him and resisted being pulled back toward her body. Each time she resisted, he looked upset and told her not to resist while continuing to smile. The pull eventually became irresistible and she returned to her body. She awoke later in the ICU with no memory of being intubated or on life support, but retained vivid memories of the out-of-body experience. She later confirmed that doctors had indeed worked on her during the code. The experience left her with clear vision during the NDE despite normally having poor vision, and extremely acute hearing during the event.
