Five-year-old Kasia was at the movies with her family when she began choking on a Life Saver candy. Her father frantically carried her upside down up the aisle, trying to dislodge the candy. At the water fountain in the lobby, she couldn't drink despite her father's desperate attempts to help. She then found herself standing about 25 feet away from the scene, watching her father shaking her body while her mother screamed and her sister stood confused. She felt great wonder and confusion, thinking "What are they doing and why am I over there and here too?" Despite being a nervous child, she felt completely calm and unafraid.
Behind her was darkness with two shadowy figures that weren't threatening. She woke up in the emergency room under a large silver light fixture. The experience helped her throughout life as family members passed away - she would stay with dying relatives to help them transition, telling them not to be afraid because there is something afterward. The clarity of the memory persisted throughout her life, and she believes she helps ease others' passing. Though young, the experience left her with lasting peace about death and the ability to comfort others facing mortality.
