At a church friend's pool party, Kari was repeatedly dunked by boys who pushed her underwater before she could catch her breath. After being dunked three times and becoming panicked, she tried to swim away underwater. Suddenly, she realized she could breathe underwater, feeling astonished and relieved that no one had told her this was possible. She felt excited and giddy, completely at peace with no fear of drowning. She began swimming toward a warm, glowing bright white light that seemed to beckon her.
Her next memory was sitting on a picnic table bench with friends around her. One boy said he had seen her under the pool steps and pulled her out. She had no memory of being pulled from the pool and experienced a gap in time. The experience left her with no fear of death and absolute confidence in the afterlife. She didn't speak about it for nearly 40 years, not wanting anyone to get in trouble or for people to think she was crazy. The memory remained crystal clear over the decades, and learning about NDEs helped her understand what had happened.
