During the birth of her third child, Karen experienced complications and was clinically dead for three minutes. She came out of her body and watched the doctors becoming very upset, with one saying "We are losing her" and another dropping something. She rose up through the bright surgical lights to the windows and found herself laughing, able to see everywhere despite having no head. She felt no pain or hunger, experiencing complete freedom. In the distance, she saw a figure approaching surrounded by lights - she knew it was Jesus Christ though she couldn't see his face. He held out his arms to her, but she told him "Please not now, I must stay with my children. There is no one else to care for them." His arms went down and she moved back to her body.
A young doctor was by her side with tears in his eyes, asking if she remembered what she saw. She told him about the experience. This doctor later became head of the hospital. The experience was particularly significant as she wasn't religious and had only attended church a couple times as a child. She later developed precognitive abilities, including warning her daughter about a flood that occurred exactly as foreseen. The experience transformed her faith and eliminated her fear of death.
