Karen's appendix had ruptured weeks before proper diagnosis, causing gangrene. During emergency surgery, she bled out and her heart stopped on the operating table. After going under anesthesia, she came out of her body, floating toward the ceiling and operating room lights. She looked down at her body surrounded by medical staff but felt no attachment, only mild curiosity. She felt free of all pain and ready to leave. She floated out of the hospital, seeing the city below, then Earth growing smaller. She experienced complete connection to everyone and everything, understanding how all are part of each other and God.
She stopped in a cloud, becoming smaller until she was like a water particle then an atom, seeing the beauty of existence at the tiniest level. She became pure energy and love while remaining herself. Entering the light, she existed there perhaps forever as time ceased. Three golden light beings appeared, calling her their beloved daughter, offering her the choice to stay in the light or return as Margaret. They said her lessons weren't complete and she was needed to learn and teach about love. She reluctantly chose to return out of love and responsibility. After the experience, she found herself able to counsel her mother's addiction clients with unusual wisdom despite being only fourteen.
