Susan arrived for a CT scan for stomach problems and when injected with contrast dye, began sneezing uncontrollably. Unable to breathe or speak, she passed out and the nurse called a code blue. By the time the team arrived she was clinically dead. From an out-of-body perspective, she observed what she initially thought was another person lying next to her, not realizing it was her own body. She felt very calm and watched as the code blue team struggled to revive her body with intubation, chest compressions, team rotations, and catheterization. She observed everything in detail during the 45 minutes before her heart began beating on its own, at which point she was pulled back into her body. When she later related her observations to the code blue team members, they verified that everything she saw had really happened exactly as she described. The experience left her more open to believing in God than before (she was agnostic), knowing there is something after death that is very peaceful, feeling closer to people with tremendously more empathy, and developing new empathic abilities. She went from believing life was not meaningful to finding it meaningful and significant.
