Steven, a former lion trainer driving a semi-truck with baby monkeys, experienced his deceased mother appearing in the passenger seat acting nervous and directing him to a hospital. She had committed suicide in 1981. She urgently guided him through town to a hospital away from the freeway, insisting he get to the emergency room. After writing notes about contacts and the monkeys, he walked toward the ER but felt like he was in a tunnel with the doors getting farther away. He felt hands grab his shoulders to keep him walking. He then found himself trying to stand on a dark hillside with loose shale, looking up at three crosses. The man on the center cross had a slash of light illuminating his beaten face, but his eyes conveyed complete love, compassion and caring. Jesus asked him repeatedly "Do you understand?" while showing him rapid successions of his life events with associated emotions. When asked about his idea of heaven, he found himself floating above the planet like in a womb with complete knowledge of everything - answers came before questions were finished. He was told to "seek out Thomas" to know Jesus/God better. He witnessed his friend John arriving at the hospital in his wife's Mercedes (which she never let him drive) with a Thanksgiving dinner plate, getting upset upon learning Steven was comatose, and throwing the plate away. Steven visited many friends' homes during his out-of-body state. He had cardiac arrest, received CPR, was defibrillated 4 times, and remained in a coma for over 17 days. After recovery, his friend confirmed driving the Mercedes to the hospital, shocking both John and his wife when Steven described it.
