Joan underwent surgery in 1993 under general anesthesia when she experienced respiratory failure requiring intubation. She stopped breathing during the procedure, creating a life-threatening situation that triggered her near-death experience. The medical team had to insert a breathing tube down her throat to maintain her airway, and she later woke up in the recovery room with a very sore throat from the emergency intubation.
During her NDE, Joan suddenly found herself above everything with an immediate and amazing feeling of peace unlike anything she had ever experienced. All fear, anger, sadness, and negative emotions completely vanished, replaced by an incredible sense of wellbeing. From her out-of-body position, she could clearly see herself and the medical team - the doctors, nurses, and medical staff working on her body below. She observed them merely as a neutral observation without any feeling or judgment about them. When she looked at herself, she discovered she had transformed into pure light, having the shape of a person but composed entirely of yellow light. Rather than being frightened by this transformation, she felt curious about her light-form existence. Joan experienced a profound shift in perception and understanding during her NDE. She saw that her own light shone brighter than the people below, whose light she could not perceive. She developed an understanding that oneness can exist without judgment, that all beings are fundamentally the same with no one being less or more than another. She received the insight that to return to the peace she experienced, she would need to love all people including herself and God, and stop judging herself and others as good or bad. She felt she should go somewhere else and began to fly upward before the experience ended. When Joan woke in recovery, she initially dismissed it as a dream until a nurse explained that her throat hurt because they had to intubate her when she stopped breathing. The experience profoundly transformed her spiritual understanding, leading her to reject guilt-based religious teachings while maintaining faith in God and the spiritual realm. She developed heightened intuitive abilities and found she could sometimes see into the past and send messages of hope to others. The overwhelming peace from her NDE remains unique in her life experience.
