Jim Martin, age 10, was suffering from severe croup on November 15, 1955, with very labored breathing throughout the afternoon and evening. After his parents called their family doctor twice and tried steam treatment without success, the doctor came to their house around 10 PM to treat him directly. She attempted to insert a metal breathing tube into his trachea but quickly determined he needed emergency surgery. Declaring there was no time to wait for an ambulance, she drove him at high speed to the hospital 40 blocks away, running red lights. Jim lost consciousness during the drive and has no memory of arriving at the hospital.
After an unknown period of unconsciousness, Jim found himself at the end of a short tunnel with an intensely brilliant light. The light was brighter than any he had ever experienced, yet his eyes had no trouble adjusting to it. His entire life's experiences passed before him in what seemed like seconds, though he now only recalls seeing his deceased cocker spaniel Ginger, who had been killed by a car several weeks before his NDE. The tunnel experience felt open, clean, and bright, with no sense of walking on ground or pavement. He moved through it without any sense of distance or energy expenditure, simply arriving at the end without understanding how. The otherworldly environment Jim entered was clearly mystical, with qualities unlike earthly existence. He felt part of something he didn't understand, experiencing quiet, clean brightness and openness. Everything had more intensity - more brightness, more color, and more awareness of his surroundings than normal consciousness. He experienced relief, calmness, and happiness, feeling united with the world around him. The entire decade of his life experiences flashed through his mind in what he perceived as only a few seconds. Jim's next memory was waking up to a bright examination room light with his own blood dripping on his face from the overhead surgical light. The vividness of this 1955 experience remains remarkably clear over 60 years later, standing out with unusual clarity compared to other childhood memories. The experience transformed his religious understanding, leading him to become active in his church and serve as a deacon of finance, as he now works on understanding the correlation between NDEs and proof of God's existence.
